I just wanted to share a short story I read in a book called Start with Why by Simon Sinek. A book I really can recommend by the way! One of the more memorable parts of it for me was when he told the story of two stonemasons, here it is:
“Consider the story of two stonemasons. You walk up to the first stonemason and ask, “Do you like your job?” He looks up at you and replies, “I’ve been building this wall for as long as I can remember. The work is monotonous. I work in the scorching hot sun all day. The stones are heavy and lifting them day after day can be backbreaking. I’m not even sure if this project will be completed in my lifetime. But it’s a job. It pays the bills.” You thank him for his time and walk on.
About thirty feet away you walk up to a second stonemason. You ask him the same question, “Do you like your job?” He looks up and replies, “I love my job. I’m building a cathedral. Sure, I’ve been working on this wall for as long as I can remember and yes, the work is sometimes monotonous. I work in the scorching hot sun all day. The stones are heavy and lifting them day after day can be backbreaking. I’m not even sure if this project will be completed in my lifetime. But I’m building a cathedral”
This story points to the importance of knowing your why. Why do you go to your job? Is it just for being able to pay your bills like the first stonemason or do you feel there is there a deeper meaning behind it like for the second stonemason?
These kind of questions are very useful to ask yourself form time to time. When I did it myself I realized that my current job didn’t give me any fulfillment and I was only there to be able to pay for my bills. Would I still do if if I didn’t get paid? No way!
I realized that what would make me feel fulfilled and satisfied in my life was if I were able to be in control of my own time and have a job where I could work whenever and from wherever I wanted, not having to follow someone else’s orders all the time and be tied to a specific physical location like my office.
I knew that people were doing things like this, but becoming a digital entrepreneur myself felt like a huge and unrealistic step. This was until I got in contact with people who started to show me how to do it step by step.
I went through SFM’s training and transitioned from having no clue at all on how to progress to having my own very promising online business up and running in a short time. And now I’m helping other likeminded people like you to get started themselves and to create their own more free lifestyle by working online. And it just feels like the start to an amazing new journey I’ve just embarked 🙂
